The Espanola area (known as the “San Juan Valley· to the early Spaniards) is described as the first Europeanfounded capital of the “New World”. This designation refers to a capital within the boundaries of the United States since Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic predates the establishment of Espanola by 100 years as a European-established capital in the Americas.
