Happy Summer Area 46!
Food for Thought…
At the planning meeting for the August assembly Ally and Christoph conducted a workshop on what Area 46 is supposed to do. The question was asked “What Does Area 46 Do?” What a great question! It made those of us in attendance really think about what purpose service at the area level does. Here is an excerpt from the A.A. Service Manual:
Servant Leadership Note
"Another qualification for leadership is “give and take,” the ability to compromise cheerfully whenever a proper compromise can cause a situation to progress in what appears to be the right direction."
Bill W., A.A. Service Manual, p. C30. (from 1959 essay “Leadership in A.A.: Ever a Vital Need”)
Not all areas operate in the same way, but generally speaking, an area’s purpose is threefold:
- To elect a delegate who will represent the area’s conscience at the annual General Service Conference, where decisions are made that affect A.A. throughout the U.S. & Canada.
- To form a local decision-making structure so groups can collectively decide on matters that affect their area.
- To carry out Twelfth Step work that may not be practical for groups, districts or intergroups to take on by themselves.
During our workshop, all three of these were mentioned in one form or another. Number three really caught my attention during our discussion. One participant put it this way, “Area 46 supports trusted servants.” This is so true. Those of us in Area, District service are here to support our fellow trusted servants.
_____________
So here is my challenge to all of you…
How are YOU supporting your fellow trusted servants?
Without A.A. members in service, 12th step would not be possible. Together we make it possible for those who desperately need our solution.
Coming to a District Near You…
In July I did a workshop/overview of A.A. Service for District 7. We had some great discussions about why service is important. I am talking with a few DCMs about workshops in their district.
Part of my role as your Alternate Delegate is to work with districts of Area 46 to host workshops. I am a ready and willing resource for you! I would love to do a workshop on any aspect of A.A. service. Some workshop ideas could be GSR orientation for your district; the life of a conference agenda item; why rotation is important; how Area 46 works and many others. I am happy to do a workshop on the same day of Eloy’s delegate report, or we can choose another time.

Area 46 Presenters at SWRAASA
The Southwest Regional A.A. Service Assembly (SWRAASA) is an opportunity to learn and share about the General Service Structure at the group, district, area, and conference levels, and to share information on the trusted service positions within that framework.
In addition to the three topics and presenters I announced in my report last month, Eloy (our Delegate) and I will also be presenting. I pulled Eloy’s topic “out of the hat” at the Southwest Region Alternate Delegate’s Committee meeting during SWRDA. I’ll keep his topic under wraps for now. At SWRAASA the Alternate Delegates present on a Tradition. I pulled Tradition 9 “out of the hat” and look forward to presenting.
SWRAASA – Get on the Bus!
My goal is to take a busload of current, future and past A.A. members in service. This way we could all ride together to, and from, Tulsa!
At the assembly I will provide a cost update for bus transportation and a sign-up sheet for the bus. This may be your last opportunity to get on the bus!
