Literature Committee – August Assembly Report

Hello from the literature committee!  Here is the report from our recent meeting at the August Assembly:

6. Open with the Serenity Prayer
7. Welcome and introductions – sign in
   • Literature committee meets on the third Thursday of the month at 6:00 p.m. over zoom
   • The Thursday, 8/15 meeting is canceled due to proximity to the Assembly
8. Literature committee accomplishments and activities
   • District literature chair guidelines released
   • New literature displays – in planning stage; will require a request for money; planning to have a motion ready for December Assembly
9. Follow-up on items from Pre-Conference Assembly (see Kerri’s delegate’s report for more details)
   • Founders’ writings discussion Area 46 outcomes
   • Plain language big book Area 46 outcomes
10. Report on literature-related outcomes from the 2024 General Service Conference (see Kerri’s delegate’s report for more details)
    • Plain Language Big Book (passed with minor editorial changes) titled: “Plain Language Big Book:  A Tool for Reading Alcoholics Anonymous”
    • New literature:
      • 5^th ed Big Book in progress; the committee is reading 5000 story submissions.
      • New pamphlet for the transgender alcoholic will be developed
      • “Black in AA: Experience Strength and hope” approved w/minor editorial changes
      • A new pamphlet on the Asian and Asian American alcoholic to be developed
    • Literature retirements
      • “It happened to Alice” and “What happened to Joe” will be retired
      • Permanently suspending the “Too Young” video adaptation project
11. Discussion: defining the future of the Literature Committee
    • Area would like to see guidance about what should go into a newcomer packet. How to do this considering it has to be individualized across our state?
    • How to handle literature purchase and shipping costs to remote communities?
    • Area is in favor of continuing to sell literature.
    • How to educate the fellowship more about what we do and literature in general.
12. Suggestions for items to discuss next time
    • Follow up on newcomer packet discussion
    • New literature display update
    • Safety card discussion
