Technology Committee Report – November 2022

Hello Area 46!

Online registration is now live for the December Assembly in Carlsbad. This will be a hybrid assembly. You can help us effectively produce this event by registering in advance for either in-person or online attendance. You can find more information on the flyer in this issue of El Farolito or on the Upcoming Assembly page of dev.aa-nia.org.

The Technology Committee is continuing to look into improving the experience of both in-person and virtual attendees at our hybrid assemblies, however we cannot do this alone. The number one factor in determining a successful hybrid event is internet reliability. Host Districts, take note! We need your help in conducting internet speed tests in every usable room to ensure minimum requirements are met before selecting a venue. We are working with the Area Chair to make these technical requirements clear to all Districts so we can have more consistent experiences across the state. Committing to the hybrid platform is a huge undertaking, and we are so grateful for any and all support outside of our committee.

There has been a recent uptick in requests for meeting attendance verification through the website. I am working with our CPC and Corrections committees to identify where the miscommunication stems from, and to suggest solutions for groups to adopt. We are also considering how we can better inform professionals about the variety of ways which our AA groups operate so that mandated members know exactly what to do when they need a paper signed. I plan to add a link to our website with information and instructions for these members as well.

I attended SWRAASA last month in Tulsa, OK to give a presentation on A.A. Area websites. You can find this presentation here: https://dev.aa-nia.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/A.A.-Area-Websites-for-n00bs.pdf. It was a fantastic event with 745 registrants, and participation from 11 A.A. Areas in the Southwest region.

The Technology Committee plans to bring two motions to the December assembly:

  1. Motion that Area 46 share elements of the dev.aa-nia.org website with any A.A. Area that asks. The requesting Area will customize the site for their purposes and assume all financial and technical responsibility to eliminate Area 46-specific content.
  2. Motion to donate the old PA system to a group or District in need within Area 46.

We have also formed a subcommittee to evaluate how providing technical support for hybrid area events has impacted the position of the Area 46 Technology Chair; and to make recommendations for how the Technology Committee might be organized to ensure that all responsibilities are met without making unreasonable demands upon the time of the Technology Chair and committee members. The subcommittee is in the process of exploring possible solutions and intends to bring a proposal before the assembly by March 2023.
